Hi,
For the past 2 weeks i've been experiencing pelvic pains, which my midwife assures me are very common and the result of hormones telling the muscles holding my pelvis in place to relax as my body gets ready for the birth. The pain is the result then of my pelvis rubbing against itself when i move.
However, sometimes its so painful it brings tears to my eyes and my mobility is being affected and i've got 2 months to go. Added to this exercise seems to be the only thing helping the water retention i've had since month 5, which i can no longer really do because of the pain.
Can Osteopathy help me?
Thanks
Amanda

Hi Amanda
Many women consult osteopaths for pain relief during pregnancy and we receive many referrals and recommendations from midwives and others involved in the care of pregnant women. I responded to a question here http://www.fpoboards.org/back-pains-muscular-whilst-pregnant-t29.html which gives some information about musculoskeletal pain in pregnancy.
Your midwife is right, your pelvis is beginning to change in order for it to become more flexible to allow the baby to be born. You are also at the time in your pregnancy when your posture is making huge changes to adjust to a significant increase in your baby’s size and weight. Not all women experience pain at this time and as osteopaths we commonly find that those women who do, have previous injuries/strains held in their tissues which make it harder for the body’s posture to adapt.
The osteopaths who were in our clinic are skilled and experienced in assessing and treating women during pregnancy and the techniques we use are very gentle. The osteopaths who assess you at the clinic will also be able to give you advice relating to how you can continue with some form of exercise/exercises to help with the fluid retention.
Here is a link to the addresses and telephone numbers for our clinics http://www.fpo.org.uk/Secondary/Misc/maps.html _________________ Nancy Nunn BSc(Hons) DPO
